John Northen focuses his practice on financial restructuring for businesses, both in workouts and in Chapter 11 proceedings, representing companies, individuals, secured creditors, committees, and trustees. He has particular experience handling complex litigation in bankruptcy courts and appeals as well as the sale or acquisition of businesses.

John is certified as a specialist in Business Bankruptcy Law by the North Carolina State Board of Legal Specialization and the American Board of Certification. John served on the panel of Chapter 7 trustees for the Middle District of North Carolina from 1979 to 2015 and has been appointed Chapter 11 trustee in the Middle and Eastern Districts of North Carolina.

John was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy in 2012, one of only 36 national nominees inducted into the 23rd Class of College Fellows at a ceremony held at the United States Supreme Court, and he is one of only 14 Fellows currently from North Carolina. In 2013, John received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bankruptcy Section of the North Carolina Bar Association
